Happy Winter Solstice! 12 days of Christmas

Happy Winter Solstice!

It's the shortest day.
Today, we celebrate the return of the light.
Welcome, Light!!!

Every year, we say we don't want to celebrate the holiday season the same old way.
Then every year, we mostly do.
Most years we say something about wanting to celebrate the Winter Solstice.
Then most years, we don't.

This year, we really decided to change it.

We decided we would celebrate the 12 days of Christmas. We would not start Christmas the day after Thanksgiving (really never did that). We would not start Christmas December 1st. We would not start Christmas until it was really close. 12 days out. That was our plan. It fell on a Sunday. Perfect. December 14. After Kevin's birthday. (Since his birthday/Christmas proximity has generally been a bone of contention for him.) Perfect. December 14th. Perfect.

Well, we'll get back to that date. It was to be a joyous day, starting with a family ritual and culminating with putting the tree up, drinking egg nog, eating gingerbread. Ahhhh...how I envisioned it. The perfect little nuclear family gathering we've never had.

And then we got sick. Pretty much all of us. But mostly me and Kevin. At the same time. That is rare, and those of you out there who are married with children understand how difficult it is. It's bad enough when you take turns being sick with your spouse, so the well one can take care of the sick one and Everything. Else. But, when you both get sick at the same time, no one gets taken care of and nothing gets done. And certainly not Christmas in a house where the spouses don't really love it.

So, no Christmas has been done. And it's now the Winter Solstice. Not to mention that we have been blizzarded here in the Pacific Northwest, which normally does not get blizzarded. And I have to think, in a way, "How perfect." I did the math last night, and if we decide to start the 12 days of Christmas today, with the Winter Solstice, they will last right to the New Year. I somewhat like that.

But, let's backtrack. What did we decided to DO for the 12 days of Christmas (that hasn't gotten done yet?)

Well, the idea was to make it somewhat simple. And make it about love and kindness and time together. Not about stuff.

I had been guided to a couple of different websites shortly before we made this decision. Here is the first:

The Story of Stuff

It's all about the nightmare that is our constant overconsumption of stuff. It wreaks terrible havoc on our planet. It wreaks terrible havoc on our lives. Christmas, as it has been celebrated by us in the past, has been pretty much the pinnacle of destruction. I even called Caspian's first Christmas with me the "Christmas of Carnage". He was 2 or 3. Probably 3. He was technically the first grandchild. He arrived at age 2, but that didn't matter to my parents. It didn't matter to Kevin's guilt about his semi-recent divorce. All these things were showered down with a rain of presents that we had to keep begging him to open, because got tired of it and had to keep moving. The poor lad would want to just play with something and we would say, "No, you have to keep opening." It really sounds like some sort of satire now, 7 years later, but it is true. Then, Kevin had to go to work (restaurant), and I spent SEVEN HOURS (I shit you not) cleaning up paper and plastic and organizing stuff. Christmas of Carnage.

It has gotten gradually better each year as we make a commitment to scale back and then don't totally. But it has gotten better. The problem is, we're parents. In the United States. As parents, we just want to give our children everything. We want to give them the dream. That's also the United States thing. But the issue is that we have been sold a bill of goods. Overconsumption. It's not even fun. And it's wrecking everything. And we know it. We, in general, and we, specifically my husband and I. But some part of us felt somewhat powerless to stop it. The part of us that felt like we still wanted to give our kids everything. Well, the story of stuff arrived at just the right moment to catalyze us.

Then, my dear friend had also set up a website for her daughter to raise funds for the needy in lieu of getting a bunch of stuff. I loved that idea, so we decided to incorporate it into our plan. (Which I will get to, eventually.) You see, the thing is, we buy our kids all the stuff they need. And we try to do it in a way that makes sense, in small increments throughout the year. They don't need an avalanche of crap at one time. It's too much. They can't even appreciate it. I remember seeing another friend of mine and a family member finding little things for the kids in their lives all year and squirreling them away. Silly, little things. And "saving them" for Christmas. It seemed so absurd to me. Just give that little thing to the kid when you find it. But here we come to one of the other ridiculousnesses of Christmas: It's a HUGE financial burden on most families. They might not describe it that way, but it is. And it's just not necessary.

And, it also sets up our economy in a very weird way. We save up save up save up for 10 months and then spend it all in 2 months. It makes no sense.

Also, about this time, I read of the poor Wal-Mart worker who was trampled to death by shoppers on Black Friday. I have never participated in Black Friday. I do not understand it. I thought it was somewhat sick before. Honestly. Now it really turns my stomach. One of the comments in the news article about this guy's untimely holiday death (or very timely) referenced the following website:

Advent Conspiracy

Now, here's the funny part. We're not even Christians. But, as Americans, we get caught up in the Christmas trap. So, that website is a bit Christian for me, but I love the ideas. I think it is brilliant. It makes so much sense. I was inspired. I shared it with my family. We decided to do something different.

And then, of course, December 14th happened: illness descended.

At any rate, here is our outline.

We agreed to scale back on presents. The kids would each get something to play with, something to wear, and something to read. This seems to be a whole movement. I have heard a lot of people doing something like this. I like it. It simplified everything and is a good amount of gifts. The kids still get gifts. They just don't get completely obliterated by so much stuff they can't even enjoy it. It also helped me focus more on what was really important to get them.

We would give more to others. I actually had a decent Christmas budget that we now intended to not totally use. We would choose charities and give.

For gifts from others, we would recommend that they also give to our charities.

Zane decided he still wanted gifts instead of giving to charity. That's ok. He's 3.

We agreed that we would spend more time together, doing fun things.

We agreed that we would really work to keep kindness in our hearts and treat each other as such and everyone.

Caspian chose the Spotlight Foundation as his charity. They help horses and trouble kids. They're local. If you'd like to join us in giving, here's Caspian's page.

Kevin and I chose Save Our Wild Salmon. They are also focusing on local environmental issues, specifically with the salmon in the Snake River. If you'd like to give to help this ecosystem, here's Kevin and my page.

So, this year, we really are going to celebrate the Winter Solstice. We are going to have a ritual and put up our tree and play in the snow. We really are changing Christmas in our house. It feels good.

As they say at Advent Conspiracy

Worship Fully
Spend Less
Give More
Love All

Thanks for reading this far. And Happy Solstice! Welcome Light!!!

Easter Photos: ok, it's only been 2 weeks

It's been almost 2 weeks since Easter, but Easter photos I said I'd have, and Easter photos I'm producing. Not only that, but I am producing them in the form of this sweet little slide show. I hope you like it. I had fun making it.

Easter Fun

Trying to get back to updating. We had a great Easter here. Of course, there was the requisite lecture from Kevin about how the holidays suck, but other than that, it was fun. The kids searched for baskets and ate candy and got too many things. Then we had an egg hunt outside, luckily before the weather turned gloomy. In the evening, we enjoyed a fabulous meal with friends and neighbors. Kevin took numerous pictures with our less-than-stellar camera (all bearing the date of January 2005), so once I get them sorted out, I'll get some posted.

ZV Turns 2!

Allright, apparently after I say, "I don't feel like blogging," then I really start to blog. Well, I didn't want to wait too long to report on Zane's second birthday.

He is such a sweetheart. I know, he's my kid and all, so of course I think he's a sweetheart. But he really is. He recently has been telling all of us how much he loves us all the time. "I love you, Mommy." But it's the emphasis he places on the words that is priceless. So sweet. And somehow, he's also come out with "I appreciate you, Mommy (or Daddy)." That's a big one, so I definitely had to document it.

Zane's birthday fell during Mercury retrograde this year, which meant that nothing went off as I would have liked it. First of all, I had to work on his actual birthday. Ugh. Even though I tried really hard to get off for it. Nothing doing. Then both Zane and I got sick. So, even though I planned to really celebrate the day before his birthday, I really just kinda sat around on the couch and watched him play with his new toys. Wooo hooo.

So, Monday morning, we let him open most of his presents. Then we did the sitting around thing. Then we had special toddler dinner: A few kinds of macaroni and cheese.

We were supposed to do the cake that night, but it fell through. Caspian was misbehaving and Zane was tired and the neighbors who were supposed to come over just plain forgot. Zane actually said he didn't want to do the cake, which was huge, because that was his favorite birthday thing to talk about. So, we waited.

On Tuesday, the 27th, his actual birthday, we just hung out and gave him some more gifts. I went to work, of course. Then we had Kevin's cool Poor Man's Lasagne Casserole that he and the kids made together. Then the neighbors did come over, and that was really fun. We sang and he blew out candles and there was cake and it was all good. It was very nice. He had chocolate volcano cake, "same size" as Caspian's. (For some reason, the word "same" is "same size" to Zane.)

Gifts included his Little People Garage set, bongo drums, potty books and videos :) starring Elmo and Bear in the Big Blue House, Dora and Diego books, other assorted books and some DVDs, a new blanket, and more mac and cheese! (Probably other things, too, but I can't remember everything.)

Happy Birthday Zane! May the next you bring you much joy. We love you. (And appreciate you.)

Birthday Earrings

My buddy, Lisa Marie Mary, wanted to see these puppies, so here are the ultra-cool earrings that Caspian made for me for my birthday.

First off, here's the closeup of just the earrings:

Birthday Recap

It's been a crazy busy week around here, but I did want to take a bit of time here to say thanks to my family, friends, and readers for all the birthday wishes. I also like posting about what we do on birthdays. Birthdays are important to me for some reason. Maybe I'm just a born astrologer. I just like them. I like mine. I like other peoples' birthdays. I think they are fun. I think they are a great excuse to celebrate someone you love. Christmas is ok, but there's so much going on and it can be stressful. I like focusing on just one person more.

So anyway, as many of you know, I had a job interview on my birthday and I ended up getting the job. Yay!

Other than that, Kevin let me sleep in some (until an unforeseen event required my assistance). Then he made his special chili for dinner. He also made a cake with the kids (pics to follow). It's a special tundra cake from my favorite episode of Blue's Clues. Yes, I have a favorite episode of Blue's Clues. Mom job hazard. Caspian made me some earrings. I have to get a picture of those. Will post later. After everyone was in bed, we watched Memoirs of a Geisha and Kevin gave me a real long shoulder massage during it. That was nice. It was a good movie. It was a good day. Here are some pictures:

Be Mine

There's just about 3 weeks to Valentines Day, so our lovers in the audience better start thinking about what you're going to do. How about something easy? I'm always down for easy gifts. I'm talking about Valentines baskets.

Gourmetgiftbaskets.com has a number of pre-designed baskets available with the finest in chocolates, nuts, wines, and fruits from the finest orchards, vineyards, and cheese makers in the world. But, you can also create a more personalized gift by designing your own and picking out the very favorite delicacies that you know your love will enjoy the most.

I don't know that I'd play this, but they did have a somewhat unique gift in the Strip Chocolate Checkers. They also had some great bubble bath and accessories baskets. Check it out.

9 Year Old Wisdom

Caspian turned 9 today!!! Yay!!! I cannot remember where the phrase "9 year old wisdom" started. It happened last night. He thought he was being particularly smart about something and said his "9 year old wisdom" must have already showed up. Heh heh. There were then many jokes about whether it was coming FedEx, UPS, USPS. Could we track it online? You know. Here's a pic for ya. I think I'll write more about the day on Shameless Reality Show, since that's what that is for.

Isn't he cute?

The Big Disappointment of New Years

We have big, big, BIG plans for New Years. And by that, I mean: none, really. Well, we have plans to have Kevin's best enchiladas in the world. And I bought a bottle of Asti. I think it was last year that Kevin refused to even drink a glass of wine with me on New Years Eve. le sigh.

It seems New Years Eve is generally disappointing for me. There was the year I got locked in the bathroom away from my friends while my boyfriend was in Guam. There was the year a different boyfriend broke up with me. There was last year without even a glass of wine. There have been many more that I can't even remember. Although I've had some fun ones with my friend Erika. She's now across the continent. (And in Florida anyway. So, if I was across the continent where I used to live, that wouldn't work either!)

Well, here's hoping. I'm supposed to be learning my rendition of "Auld Lang Syne" on Zane's xyolophone. I need to go practice. I'm thinking I'll just do my best to make the holidays fun for me and the kids on my own, because Kevin's not really into it. We'll see. Maybe he'll surprise me one of these days.

Cookies, cookies, and more cookies

No, this is not a tech entry. I have made two batches of cookies in the past few days. One is already gone. Zane is such a cookie monster, and unfortunately, so am I! I am already waaaaay over my Weight Watchers flex points for the week. But I'm still counting, which is new for me. I am hoping that will help. In the past, once I went over, I stopped counting and just did whatever I wanted.

Well, here is Mr. Cookie.

Caspian's Early Christmas: We can't do anything normal

Caspian is leaving tomorrow to have Christmas with his mom, so we had our Christmas with him a little bit early. We let him open all his gifts and also let Zane open a good number of his. Zane didn't know quite what to make of it at first, but was good. Then, as things progressed, he got a little giftcrazy. And just a little crazy.

Oh Christmas Tree! (Part Quatre)

Wow! Quatre. What a series. More than just a trilogy! Well, I put Zane to bed around 9:30 and fell asleep with him. I woke up once and Kevin was not in bed. I woke up again and Kevin was not in bed. I envisioned him on the loveseat, in front of the t.v., asleep. So, I decided to be a good wife and get up and wake him. Look what I found instead...

We had talked about wrapping tonight, but I thought I might have put the kibosh on that with my early sleeping. Nope, he went ahead and did it without me, which I think is just great. He usually does most of the wrapping anyway, as he gets so creative with it. I used to care about wrapping, but then one or two Christmases, I REALLY overdid it with the specialness of my wrapping and I really can't care anymore. I'm just a functional wrapper now. But his are so pretty! My Santa is an artiste!

Oh Christmas Tree! (Part Trois)

Hey, check it out! Kevin finally got it up! (Hee hee...I had to do that after this post.)

Zane loves the tree. And rightfully so. It is small, but it was my grandmother's. You cannot see in this picture, but it is made from painted pine cones. It's a little worse for the wear and every year I think I'll get a new one, but every year it seems fine and I don't know if I could bear to get rid of it. We did inherit a big tree by moving in with my mom, so maybe next year, when Zane is bigger.

~t

Oh Christmas Tree! (Part Deux)

Here's as far as we got. Festive, isn't it? I have no idea where my white "simulated snow runner" is since we moved. Somehow Kevin was suprised after we got this far that the rest of us thought he might bring the Christmas tree up from the basement. I do have hopes for today, though. I will keep you posted.

Oh Christmas Tree!

Well, it's finally time when we think, "Hey, maybe we should pull out our shrimpy little tree." People have been giving us some flack, but that wouldn't make us do it. Then people got even worse on us by saying, "Oh? You're going to put up a tree?" Jinkies. We always at least put up our shrimply little tree. I just don't like how the Christmas season starts on Halloween. Call me crazy. I generally put it up once I start to get presents in the mail or I start to wrap my own. Caspian's departure this week makes it a little bit more pressing as well. We tried to do it yesterday, but just didn't seem to get around to it. Well, hopefully, I'll have some lovely pics later for you.

Conspiracy Carols: A little paranoid fun for the holidays

Tired of the same old boring Christmas carols? It could be time to see those old familiar songs in a new light. With Conspiracy Carols, you can poke a wee bit of fun at your most paranoid friends and family. When you visit the above, you get to pick and type in whatever subversive message you'd like to embed in "Jingle Bells". Then, it prompts you to send an email to your friend or family member, telling them of the hidden message found in "Jingle Bells", with a link so they can hear it for themselves. I'm not usually one for practical jokes, but I thought this was pretty funny. The only downside for me was that it wanted to automatically send through Outlook, which I don't have set up.

This brought to you on behalf of OfficeMax.

Christmas eCard Games

I always think there's nothing new under the sun and then another new thing shows up that is both obvious and totally creative at the same time. This time, I'm talking about Christmas games on Christmas eCards.

I don't generally send Christmas cards. I don't know why. I'm just not that into cards. I do, however, like the convenience and non-waste aspect of eCards. And the fact that if you totally forget until the day of, you can STILL get people a card on time. That's really great.

The blog post that I linked to above talks about bluemountain.com's new eCards with games on them. The games are flash-based, interactive, Christmas-themed fun. There are a number of different varieties. I especially liked Santa's Snow Run, where you get to steer Santa doing extreme snow boarding and get points for clearing jumps. Here's a screen shot of it:

I'm also a big fan of mistletoe. I guess I'm still a romantic at heart. One of the games is called Mistletoe Tag. In this game, you try to click the different characters to "kiss" them as they show up under the mistletoe. But if Scrooge shows up and you kiss him, you lose a point. Here's a shot of one of your "kissees".

Bluemountain.com has been around a while in the eCard business. You can get an annual membership for $13.99, which is a pretty good deal. You can even try out the membership for free for 30 days before deciding to sign up. If you get the membership, you're even less likely to miss a special occasion because they have a calendar feature that allows you to shop for your cards ahead of time and send them out at a later date. Nice.

"I love you, I love you both. But you won't be getting presents."

Just heard that on GMA. Diane Sawyer said that to her co-stars about Christmas presents. It sounds a little nasty now that I'm writing it. But it really wasn't. I loved it. They were talking about holiday stress. We put too much stress on ourselves, especially as women. I really don't do that too much, but I do agree there is too much stress, even in my little non-Christmasy life.

What if we could really change what Christmas is about? What if we didn't buy in to all the buying? Where does it end? I don't know. I haven't figured it out yet. Part of me likes it. I like to get things for people. I like to give things to people. I like sharing about the deals and cool things I find right here on my blog.

Maybe it's just like Diane said, "I love you. I love you both. But you won't be getting presents." The message for right now is, if I don't get you anything, it doesn't mean I don't love you.

Kevin's Birthday--The Update

So, Kevin turned 36 on the 9th of December, as you could see from some of my posts. I figured I should update how it went. We had a nice, relaxing day. Kevin slept in, drank coffee, got a professional massage and a new flannel, and then we worked on his PPP vid and watched a movie (Clerks II, as perhaps you could have surmised). Oh, and I made peanut butter brownies, which I decided to call "peanut butter bars with some chocolate in them" because I had no recipe and just added peanut butter at my own discretion. Everyone said they liked them, though. Here is Zane enjoying them. I am told that he started with the spoon and then threw it aside. I think I was grabbing the camera.

Yeah, I don't have a decent pic of Kevin on his birthday. I might have a vid. I'll be posting a bunch of stuff over at musingstardust.com featuring Shameless Reality Show, hopefully real soon.

Happy Birthday Kevin!!!

Hey Kevin,

Welcome to your day! We're happy you're here. It is currently 3:00 am, so there is no way I can produce a post any where near the magnitude of beauty that you made for me yesterday, but I wanted to produce one anyway. Maybe I'll get poetic on you someday soon, but not right now.

(Yes, readers, we will stop just gushing about each other all over our blogs soon. I think. Hey, that might be a good blog. There was that book a while back with all the letters that you could take out of the book...Nick and someone wasn't it? Someone help me out here.) Anyway...again...HAPPY BIRTHDAY KEVIN! I love you!

Eat your heart out, Colleen. ;)

~t

ps--check out Shameless Reality Show later today to see and hear how Kevin feels on his birthday.
